TO 30 questions

I purchased a TO 30 in great condition, but I have some questions: the previous owner has reversed the polarity of the 6V battery, and the tractor still seems to run well-- how can this be? I am going to change back it ASAP, but I am wondering if something has been modified on the tractor to allow it to run this way or if any damage may have been done to it-- I don't see anything obvious.
I am also curious about determining whether the hood is an aftermarket part or the original-- it is in almost pristine condition (no emblems on it, but the holes are there). Anything to look for on it to tell?
Last question-- besides the Shop manual (which I have ordered), can anyone recommend some other valuable resources for the owner of a Ferguson?
Thanks alot-- this forum has been very helpful and extremely educational!!

Ben, Your TO will run on either polarity, and yes, in theory you do get better spark with positive ground, which is why all old 6V systems were positive ground. It has something to do with some obscure electrical theory of which I am no expert. Your starter doesn"t care if it is pos or neg., it spins the same direction. If you switch back to pos. ground, check your coil, if it is the original 6V coil, you want the + terminal to be connected to the distributor. To polarize your generator for a pos. ground - make all your wiring changes first, then with the tractor ignition off, use a piece of wire to jumper between the A terminal on the generator to the negative term. on battery. Just need to do that for an instant & that is it.
I have found another good manual to have is the original Ferguson "operation and maintenance" manual. It is easy to find as a re-print & is only ~50 pages. I got mine on Ebay for a few dollars. It has all the good info like how to adjust linkages and what kind of oil to add where, how many hours between service, and other goodies that are not in the shop manual.

As long as you polarize the generator, and properly connect the coil to the distributor, the ground can be either positve or negative. I believe you have to reverse the wires on the ammeter also. The OEM configuration is positve ground.
In my opinion the Ferguson Shop Manual is the best info source. It contains systems decriptions as well as repair proceedures. The Parts Manual and the Owners Manual are also valuable sources of information

Thanks Jerry---
I would like to get it back to it's original wiring so I can reference the Manual without confusing myself, so I will check all the wiring with the schematic. Do you know the proper way to polarize the generator? I am also not sure if it is charging the battery... the ammeter does not work (probably because it is still wired for Pos ground). I read somewhere that with a 6V system you get a better spark with a Pos. ground-- is this true?
Thanks again

No I don"t believe that true. As long as the coil wire for the primary circuit between the coil and the distributor is attached to the coil terminal with the same sign as the battery ground the sparkenergy is equivalent. The OEM system was positive ground.

To polarize the generator, MOMENTARILY touch a jumper wire between the non grounded battery terminal and the armature connection of the generator. There be a small spark and that"s all there is to it.
