Was a rear light (or lights) a standard feature on a 1952 TO-30? If so, is this a readily available part? I would like to find something as close to the original as possible. Thanks
Ben

Jeff-oh said: (quoted from post at 14:44:31 10/10/07) Phil is the real expert here.

You may want to get a copy of Ferguson Furrows Issue #9 from Paul Nelson. That issue contains Phil's excellent article on Ferguson lighting systems.

Though the Tarus light is not made, the Ford 8N light which is very similar is in reproduction.

If you want to see what the reproductions look like do an e-bay search on Ferguson lights. There are several people offering them. Though you should shop around first.

These lights came on my 44 2N. I was told they are off a Ferguson. They have Hall II stamped on them. I was searhing the archives and someone mentioned they never had a snap ring to hold them in.

Thanks, Joe

These are Ford lights. Hall made Ford lights, but the design is different from the Ferguson Hall lights. Ferguson used a bezel with two screws and the Ford used a snap ring as you call it with one screw to tighten it up.

Joe,

I have not seen that snap ring design for the Ferguson lights. I do think those are off the FOrd as you said.

I think I was incorrect in my previous comment on the Ford lights. To my knowledge, Ford Hall lights did not use a spring clip to hold in the sealed beam or lens. They only show in their parts book the bezel with the retaining screw at the bottom to secure it. And this is the only style I have observed on all the Ford tractors I have seen restored and otherwise. However, I do know they are not Ferguson lights. If you are keen on finding out the answer to this mystery I would suggest going to the Ford forum and ask the question and their experts can tell you if this style was ever used on Ford. Hall made lights for a lot of applications.

thanks for the feedback...

The Ford guys are telling me they are off a Ferguson. So I guess at this point they must not be from either.

Thanks, Joe

The $700.00 was paid for a complete uninstalled light set in the orgional box. i.e. collerctor piece. They were, as seen, in mint condition, perfect chrome. That set was truely rare find.

Lights in good condition run about $40 to $80 a set and the Taurus lights $50 to $100

What I have seen on e-bay over the last few years.

Reproduction head and work lights of the Taurus design are available from Sparex dealers. They are of excellent quality and design. I know of no source at this time for replacement left-side taillights of the Taurus design.

To make a slight correction, Hall, not Taurus, manufactured the headlights and work light. Only the taillight was made by Taurus.

The reproduction headlights and work light are of the later, stamped mounting ring, design. This design used the "W" clips to hold the lamp in place. The earlier design used through the TO-35 6v tractors, had a cast mounting ring. The cast design used a retainer that was screwed in place.

This detail is only visible when the lights are dismantled.

Here is the whole Kit laid out. Note the work light is on the right. The kit had all the p-clips and wiring included.

This one sold on e-bay a few years ago for over $700.00

Jeff, Any possibility of getting me a larger picture of the entire kit? I just want to look at a couple of the fasteners. I have most of a kit put together but just want to confirm a couple of things before I start bolting it to the tractor.

The rear lights consisted of a "work light" which was the same as the headlight except for an off/on switch integral with the light and a tail light with a red lens and a white lens for license plate(if installed). These were an optional part and installed by dealers. They are available by salvage or a replica of the front and rear white lights can be purchased through catalog sales. The red tail light is not being produced to my knowledge, only from salvage. The work light was installed on the right side fender and the tail light on the left side fender. The brackets to do this are available via salvage or through reproductions in catalogs. Maybe the MF dealer sells them, but I am not sure.

PhilF is the resident TO30 lighting expert, but I believe the rear light on a TO30 so equipped was the Taurus unit which was also used on some Fords of the period.

To clear up any confusion, the tail light for the TO30 was mfd by Taurus(saysTaurus on the red lens)and it was also use on Ford 2N/9Ns. The Ford 8N used a different manufacurer, Duolamp, although some early 8Ns still had the Taurus. The Taurus tail light in good condition or restorable condition will range from $50 to $100+ if the seller knows what he has. And the price keeps going up.
