If I'm successful there should be a picture or pictures of my TO-20 project.

Neil, Fine pic, fine job, good hobby. The only thing is That cinder block under your tractor. Please for safety sake replace it with wood or something solid before you add any more weight. I have seen too many blocks crumble. I don't want to hear of any one getting hurt or the paint getting scratched for the lack of solid blocking. Sorry to put a damper on your fine work.

Lyle

No need to apologize for being concerned about my safety. Thanks!!!!
The blocks are concrete and just a resting place. If I need to get under I always put a floor jack in place for a backup.
What I should do is make up some angle iron stands like the ones shown in the shop manual.

Neal, WOW, that looks great. I would love to break mine down like that but I use it quite a bit and just can't find enough time. What method of degreasing did you use? Sandblast?
If it's not too much trouble e-mail me pictures direct as the project goes.
Fantastic job and good luck.
Joe

I vote with Neal, sandblasting is not the prefered method. The sand is forced into every possible opening. Unless you are going to take every bolt, gear, shaft, seal, bearing etc. out and flush/clean it, you will be replacing some of them every time you turn around. You know what that will do to your pocketbook. Neal's hands on cleaning will take more time, however there is no abrasive hiding to later ruin a great restoration.

I can e-mail you the pics I have now if you would like but they total over half a meg and may take awhile to download. I'm going to try to put a link URL in this message that will take you to my photopoint album. If that doesn't do it for you, let me know and I'll send them to you.
I wish I had a sandblaster or something but what I did was this. First I scraped off the big stuff with a putty knife. Then used stiff bristle brushes and with soap and water. When it dried I used a 4 inch angle grinder with a stiff wire brush on it. After that I wiped it with mineral spirits and then primered. All this was after I removed all the sheet metal and wheels and engine and got it on stands. Painting is with spray cans of Rustoleum Smoke Gray.
I started last fall and hope to be ready when the grass is.

Looks great! One nice thing is parts are easy to get for these machines.I remember the late nights and skinned knuckles from 1988. Trouble is, I used mine farming, now it needs it again. I want to see your completed work, please post a picture again or perhaps I can see it, I live in Stanford IN.

If thats the Stanford on the way to Bloomington then we are real close. I live in between Bloomfield and Switz City right on 54. If you know where the 4H grounds are I'm right across the road from the field where they have the rodeo and tractor pulls. You are very welcome to stop by.
Here's another angle on the project also.
