TO30 - Changing to a High Performance coil

Has anyone installed the Pertronix 'Flame Thrower' high performance coil on a TO 6-volt system? Any comments or cautions? Will the rotor and cap life still be good with the higher voltage?

My TO30 6 volt system was very reliable until..... I ruined one of the terminals on the coil when I was removing it for some engine painting. Since I have to replace it, it seemed like a good idea to go with the higher voltage coil. But I don't want to spend the $ right now to upgrade to a 12v system or an electronic ignition.

Thanks ahead of time for your help!

Thanks, everyone, for your input. I might just try the high performance coil. The engine used to miss at idle speed after being warmed up. Maybe the extra oomph will help in that area. Plus, like George mentioned, the flame thrower logo will look cool. ha!
George - enjoyed your web site about rebuilding your 20.

The voltage output of a coil depends mainly on the spark plug gap that spark has to jump. The wider the gap, the higher the coil voltage. If the gap is too wide, you could exceed the breakdown insulation of the coil, wires, etc., and things start arcing elsewhere other than at the plug. But the bottom line is that a higher voltage system will permit one to widen the spark plug gap and this will help to keep the plugs cleaner. Some high perfomance coils can provide more current when the spark does ocurr.

Bill. yes I have a 6V "flame thrower" with standard points & condenser ignition. It works good, no complaints. No, I don"t burn thu caps & rotors any differently than my old coil.
I can"t say one way or another if the Hi perf. coil makes any difference in my TO, but the little flame thrower logo on the side of the coil looks cool.

I don't know if you can get a higher voltage 6 volt coil. I put a 12 volt one on an older 4cly car and it seemed to start better and run better all speeds, but I had to use higher performance plug wires. I never saw any effect on cap rotor or point life. But the stock ignition system in good shape and properly adjusted and new plug wires should work just as well for you.

That "high performance" coil probably needs the transistor ignition to perform.

But what's wrong with a plain old coil? The TO30 engine is neither high speed or high compression. The plain old coil has worked adequately for about 50 years...

A coil does not force voltage. It only makes it available which is not ever needed to fire a TO30 spark plug.I would use a common 6volt oil filled coil. CENTAUR
