1949 TE20 PTO Question

Question that I have is this…..

Should the PTO on the Ferguson always turn when the clutch is engaged? If I connect a mower or an auger to this tractor will it always turn?

The PTO has a device on it which will not allow the implements attached to the PTO from powering the tractor forward when I stop the tractor.

what is the SN of your TE? I am guessing it is below 48000 and you have a Cont. Z120 engine in it.

If that is so, then it will handle a 60" mower with out problems. Mine only gets bogged down in the heavest of grasses and the remedy is to take a partial pass in that area.

Why limit your self to a smaller mower everywhere.

The SN is TE-85206. Yea, I have a 60" on that little Kubota I want to have at least that on this tractor if not bigger. There where (very few) times I had to double cut with that one too. I"m thinking I may end up selling the Kubota and getting a larger tractor than the TE20. Wish I had looked at older tractors back when I spent 10K on the BX2200 6 years ago when I bought this place. Oh well live and learn. I"m finding out that the older stuff is better if you dont mind tinkering with mechanical stuff. I got rid of my new GMC PU truck and bought a 1985 Dodge Ram beater. I have had less trouble with this 22 year old truck than I did with the one that was only a year old.

The Kubota I have now has a 60" Belly mower. I’m thinking about selling this tractor though. I’ve had more than my share of problems with it and it’s not easy to work on. I have it tore apart now.

Don’t need to cut brush just do finish mowing on 5 acres, don’t want to go with anything smaller than a 60" deck though. I’m hoping I didn’t make the same mistake by getting too small of a tractor again. I really like this tractor so far it seems to have good power plus always wanted an antique tractor, like the history behind the Ferguson.

I’m working on fencing in my property and didn’t think the Kubota BX2200 would be up to the task as far as using an auger not to mention I would need to get the low profile auger. Grading the driveway and plowing snow is not easy with the BX line of Kubota’s even with 4 wheel drive.

You can turn off the pto with the lever under the left side of the seat. It will also stop the hydraulic pump from operating since it is pto shaft driven and thus the 3 pt hitch won"t work.

The ORC will stop the inertia of pto driven equipment from driving the tractor through the transmission even when the clutch is disengaged.

The tractor I have is equipped with an ORC. Being that I don’t know much about these old tractors or tractors as a whole (other than my BX2200) this is good because I’m sure I would have had a problem (hurting myself) without knowing about or having the ORC installed. I’m thinking the ORC wasn’t standard on these tractors when purchased new?
I didn’t see the lever to disengage the PTO but I’ll look for it tonight after work (I’m sure I just missed it). It’s good to know that the 3 point hitch won’t raise with the PTO disengaged too. At first I thought the 3 point hitch was not working until I figured out I had to let up on the clutch for it to lift. Guess I’ll have to invest in the “Zane Thang” (saw this elsewhere on this sight) so the 3 point hitch operates independently. I got this tractor on Saturday 10/27. The tractor seems to run well (much better than my BX2200) for grading my driveway. So far I think I made a good investment with this Old Ferguson…

I’m now looking for an auger and a mower for this unit. I own 5 acres and have been running the Kubota on it for about 6 years, after the first year I wished I had bought a larger tractor.

Yea, now that I think about it I guess I wouldn't need it for that. But I would like it for the auger though. I looked at it on line (nothing against Zane)but its a bit more than I want to spend right now.

I consider myself handy. I have rebuild a few motorcycle motors and such. I figured If I did enough research and talked to the right people I could build my own.

A Zane thing is not a necessary item. You will not need one with a finish mower. Also there are other options.
