TEA20- Starter switch leaking

I have not been on this forumn for a while. I recently moved into my new house that I build this past summer.

Anyway, I had some time this afternoon and I started to investigate a problem I have with my TEA20 85.

If I leave the battery hooked up, it drains while sitting idle. I usually disconnect the negative cable when I park her for a while.

Anyway I think I have determined that the starter switch is leaking to ground. There is a slight resistance showing between the positive terminal and ground when I measure it with an ohm meter. ( I disconnected all wires on the ignition switch)

What do you think? Is it time for a new switch?

Regards

Well, I did some further digging. It is not the switch that is leaking. I traced it to the alternator.

The alternator is easier to fix, just take it to a repair place. The switch would have been more exciting.

Thanks for the response Jeff.

Do you have a switch like this one? This is off my TE20. If you have this rounded top type then it does not come apart like the later TE switch Bon is reffering to.

Basicly, yes it is time to get a new switch. The carbon insulation is probally shot on the inside and allowing the current leakage.

New switches are available from Sparex. Do not get the TO-20 switch as sold here and on e-bay it is different.

The bell housing switch comes apart. There are three (or four?) screws in the top, around the center terminal you can remove, disassemble and clean the switch.
