I am rebuilding my Z134 from my 58 TO35 and the gasket kit comes with 4 strands of small rope about 8 feet long in a package marked "rope seal". I believe that this must be for the sealing material that goes at the edges of the rear main bearing. I have never used this type of seal before. I am assuming that it gets jammed and packed into the slots after the bearing is in place. Is this correct and does anyone have any insight or special techniques? Anyone had problems with leaks here? Thanks in advance. Bob in CA

I put a little RTV sealer in the hole where the rope (string) goes . Than jam the string in the hole. Works well for me.

Yes you would think tey could come up with a better product. I twisted the strands together and packed them into the bearing cap with a small welding rod. Cut the ends off with a very sharp knife and put a dab of shellac on the ends. Other
books show packing more string into the holes after the cap was in place. Remember there is
shouldn`t be any pressure in the pan so the packing is to stop the oil from weeping out.You don`t want any oil on your clutch disk. Take your time and put your engine together right the first time.

You are correct about the rope seal. Do not strech the rope, as it will contract with age. I always rub the rope full of powdered graphite before installation. Wear gloves, or you will not be welcome back in the house(at least I wasn't).Wives tend to think discolored hands are dirty, even if you used a bunch of hand cleaner. My TO30 has a small rear seal leak now,but it's so small it's no problem. The oil just drips out of the drain hole in the flywheel housing occasionally. I can change it without removing the crankshaft anyway, just need to find the time.
Good luck with the overhaul. Ray
