Can a Ferguson be Dated by the engine serial number only? The only number I see on the block is 300608 but this does not seem to fit with the charts. The original serial number plate on the dash behind the steering wheel and above the throttle is missing, but the four holes are there so it seems it is a TO-20 or TO-30. the tractor is in Ontario Canada

You won't find a "Continental Z #".

Your tractor does not have a Continental engine.

You don't have a TO20 or a TO30.

You have a British built, very early Ferguson TEA20 with a Standard Motor Company engine.

Look on the diff housing - see my photo above - and you will find the approximate date of manufacture.

That number you gave is a Standard motors casting number so it would appear that you have a TEA20 tractor. It is unlikely but not impossible to be a TO series as they were for the USA only Canada was supplied from the UK with TE'types, there are odd TO tractors around the border area but there are exceptions. Bob gave you a picture of the casting date of the housing below the seat, that will tell you when that housing was made and it would be used in production within about 4 - 6 weeks. The engine number is stamped in the Block between the oil filler and the coil on the left side of the engine, we may be able to give you some idea of when that engine was made, maybe not. It may not be the original engine or cylinder block...John

As you have a TEA20, you can get close to the date of manufacture from the date cast into the right hand side of the diff housing, between the transmission flange and "port hole" inspection plate.

third party image

Above - the numbers "6 7 3" indicates a diff housing casting date of 6 July 1953. The tractor manufacture date will be a week or two later.

If it is any guide, my Ferguson TEA20-85, serial number TEA 341439, with engine number SC52793E was built on July 10, 1953.

If you post your engine number here, John (UK) should be able to give you a likely year of manufacture.

Preoblem solved!!! third party image You don't have a TO20 or TO30!!!

Searching through my restoration photos; is this the "300608" casting number you have?

third party image

If so, you have a Ferguson TEA20, Standard engine, made in the UK! :o

Now look on the left side of the block, behind the coil mount:

And you will find the engine number. It should commence with "S" or "SC".

An engine number will not accurately date a TEA20 as the engines were not used in sequence.

The Continental engine number will be found on a small data plate with the engine valve settings stamped on it. It"s located on the left side of the engine, approximately between the #2 and #3 spark plugs and just below the split between the cylinder head and the block. It will start with either Z120- or Z129-. The cast numbers you refered to in your original post is just a casting number. Because you don"t have the air inlet screen in the dash, me thinks you have a TO-20 or TE-20( the TE-20 has Lucas electrical components on a cContinental Z120 engine). Another way to tell is that the TO-30 has a oil filter externally on the right hand side of the engine. The TO/TE-20 has an internal filter under the coverplate on the oil pan.

If you have a TEA-20, you"ll have the Standard Motors engine and I believe it has an external oil filter on the left side and Lucas electrical components.

And I might add that because it was a very early number (the first was 60001), someone has probably stolen the tag to make a faux....

Yes... If this is the number on the engine plate (preceded by Z129), then your tractor is a very early 1951 TO-30... Here is a chart I put together some time ago.. It is also in the archives... The tractor serial number is sequential but the engines were randomly selected from a lot on the floor... Probably withing several hundred or so, your serial number is approximately ESN-240000=TSN, i.e. about 60608.. and early 1951 TO-30.... Jim

Look for a metal plate attached to the left side of the engine block. The Z129 engine number will be stamped to that tag. You might need to clean some grime off the engine to see the tag. I did!

The number 300608 is cast into the block on the exaust manifold side of the engine. The dash does have the air inlet screen on the right side.At first glance I didn't see any markings on the distributer side of the block, but I may have missed something

Is there a air inlet screen on the right side of the dash? It should be about 2-3 in. high 3-4 in. wide, It would be on the right side of dash almost to the right edge. If it is there it is a TO 30, if not a TO 20. The engine number is on the left side just below the dip stick. They are cast numbers. Z 120=TO 20. Z 129=TO 30.

I believe if Jim in OH is around He can probably tell you what year it is if you have all the engine numbers.

Not enough to go on to even determine what type of tractor you have.
Which engine - Standard or Continental?

There has to be more to the engine number. Should be "Z120", "Z129", "S" or "SC".
Is the engine number stamped into the block (between the distributor and coil) or is there a plate riveted on?

6 volt or 12 volt?

Cast aluminum or cast steel transmission?

In short, you can't determine the tractor year of manufacture from the engine number, but you may get close.
