I took the generator from my Ferguson TO35 sn#167980 to be rebuilt. The armature is bad and the original is no longer available. The replacement does not have a hole in the end of the shaft to screw on the tac drive gear. It seems that these are unsual threads. Does anyone know what size I need to drill and tap the hole so I can install the tac drive gear?
Thanks
Tony

Hello, I have been told that the generators that were used on the MF 100 series will work. As for the tapped hole, I am in the same boat. I have not checked the pitch of the thread yet, I need to buy the gear box. Pitch is equal to 1 divided by number of peaks in a inch. If you have a nice ruler measure the length of the threaded shaft, count the peaks.
Lets say the area is 3/8 long. count the peaks in a 1/4" length and multiply by 4. That will be the thread pitch. I would not expect the screw to be metric but you never know.

I would expect the thread to be either 1/4-28 or a 5/16-24. Possibly LH threads. The shaft will be case hardened. You will need to break the case hardness of .060 inch (typically) with carbide tooling. Your standard drill bit will not work! If you are in Michigan I could be of more assistance. Personally I plan to buy a new genny.

Sincerely, John

This is one thing I've yet to find out myself. I've got the same issue. Tractor came with a rebuilt genny, and I've gotta get the end drilled and tapped. Hopefully someone here will respond with what the thread is. If not, I'll have to see if I can figure it out by playing with the thread gauges at work.

I've searched the forums here and haven't come across it.

Ted

I took it to a machine shop that has been in business 90 years and they did not have the correct size tap. But he told me he had sources and would try and get the correct tap. If I find out I will let you know.

I found out the hole for the tach drive is 3/8 by 32 threads per inch. Thanks to Rodney from Baker Manufacture & Machining in Kankakee IL. He drilled mine out for me and it works great. Thanks Rodney
