I have a 1950's TO 20 and rear hydraulics quit working. The rear pto was leaking so I pulled it and replaced the seal thinking possibly dirt in the oil. I put it back together , no leaks, pto turns fine but still no hydraulics. New to the tractor scene so any ideas where to start troubleshooting would be appreciated. One thing I have noticed is when checking oil level it seems to have a milky color to it.

Thx !

Just wanted to say thx Jerry for all your help! I checked everything you suggested, control valve , pulled pressure relief valve and cleaned, changed oil and checked all over for leaks to no avail. Got frustrated and tried tapping on things when I tapped on the pump lightly all of a sudden started working. Don't know if something was stuck or dirt or what but works now. THX again !!

Linkage seems to be moving the control valve fine now, but still nothing. PTO is turning fine and pump from what I can tell is spinning. Is the last resort to pull the top plate under the seat?

Thx

The control valve is under the oil. How do you know it is moving? Shut down the engine and see if the fork is attached to the "T" shaped valve stem. You can work you hands down there or drain some oil off until yoi can see the "T" shaped valve stem. If the fork is not on the valve stem, slightly spread the fork with your fingers and get it on the "T" shaped valve stem.

Well I pulled the cover off and I can see the linkage I guess to the control valve. Starting in the down position when I start moveing the lever up the linkage starts to move. When I get about half way up the linkage no longer moves but the lever continues all the way up like there's nothing there. I can move my lever a total of about 6 inches travel at the top back and forth free as can be and the linkage does not move at all. Any ideas? Thx

That milky color is water in suspension in the oil. This can occur from condensation or a leaky transmission shift lever boot (if the tractor is left out in the open). Working the tractor generates heat in the transmission which will help evaporate the water. otherwise, you need to drain the oil and refill it with 6 gallons of fresh oil.

Are you sure the pto engagement lever on the left side of the tractor is engaged so that the pump is being driven? If so, you may have a stuck control valve or the link that moves the control valve may have come off the control valve. the relief valve can also have a peice of dirt holding it open . Pull the side cover then start the engine, engage the pto lever. The pump should be turning.(DO NOT STICK YOUR HANDS IN THE HYDRAULIC COMPARTMENT WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING!) Put the lift contol lever full up adn watch the link that operates the control valve for motion. If it moves that"s good. If the lift doesn"t move then the link has come off the control valve and needs to be put back on. Shut down th engine to do this.

Look near the base of the pump. Is there a lot of swirl or agitation and noise? If so the relief valve is stuck open. Shut down and pull it to clean up or replace. Look up at the lift cylinder. Is it leaking? Any more than a few drops is not good. the seals ot the cylinder may need replacement. Using a mirror and a flashlight, or removing the left side access plate, look in the right hand corner of the compartment for a leaky supply tube.

Hope this helps.
