I have a stock 12 volt TO 35. I just had the generator gone over. I jumped the terminals on the generator and got a spark so I know it is putting out. I put on a new voltage regulator. When you turn on the ignition switch the voltmeter will jump up to about 4 volts. Once the engine starts it doesn't read anything. Have I bought a bad regulator or might something else be wrong.

I have been there, checked all charging system parts, replaced parts, but system still would not charge properly.

Problem was the battery: If you have a charging problem you must check battery first, charge battery then have a load test (parts store) if battery is bad, your charging sytem will not work and can burn up you regulator.

If generator is working, you may have to trace each wire, if like my to35 wires are old and rotten, you may have a break. Be sure the new regulator is correct, hard to tell for these parts counter boys.

Good luck,

You might want to make sure you have a voltage regulator that is for the ground you use. If you are positive ground you will need a positive ground VR. You are really polarizing the generator. The instructions Gregg gave are good if you have a negative ground system. If you have a positive ground system then touch the negative terminal on the battery. In other words jumper between the "A" terminal on the generator and the non-ground terminal on the battery. This is just stuff I have learned from people on this forum - just want to pass it on.
Have a fantastic NEW YEAR - as you guessed it is a little dull here in Decatur, Texas.

Thanks Gregg; I had forgotten how to do that. Anyway it didn't fix it so I guess I got a bad regulator. Guess I'll go to the parts house tomorrow unless someone can tell me something else to try.

There are 2 regulators that fit your Tractor, Besides 6-or 12volt versions, Take your old unit with you,to match up Terminals. The are not hard to find,at the Parts stores. Gregg
