My step-dad bought our farm from the widow Kuhlman. Mr Kuhlman had an Old McCormick Tractor he had bought in the early 1930's. He truck farmed with that tractor up until the mid 1950's. As was the custom of the day he built a little barn to park his tractor in. It was just big enough to accommodate the machine with elbow room in front to turn the crank. The old steel wheeled tractor was still in place when we took possession. Pap called the junk man to have it hauled off. I was there when they came and loaded it up. After they left we went in the little shed and I noticed ruts in the cement floor. I asked Pap about them and he told me the story about how Mr Kuhlman had cranked the tractor while it was in gear. The engine had caught and pinned him against the front wall of that little barn. When he didn't come in for supper his wife found him, she said the tractor was still running and grinding him into the wall. That story made my hair stand on end, must have impressed Pap too, he bought the first Ferguson and I wouldn't have anything else.

Stewart. Are your steering box gears/rack sectors worn? If you have slop in the steering are you sure it is not the drop arm bushes or the steering box simply needs adjustment via the adjustment screws?

BOB, I have had new bushes made for the box but
the gears are badly worn and don't mate up well with the new shaft gear. Any Ideas?

I have a TEA-20 with the original gear shift starter switch. It is a BEAUTIFUL system. And yes a new unit is easily obtained. I do not know how to install it correctly. Others on this forum know about this.
But getting it is a good idea. I use the system and cannot figure out why people would change it to something else.
HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM DENMARK

Thanks to all for the replies. Have got a stick shift switch installed now. I need steering box gears now. Don't see them anywhere on the parts list. Klaus, where exactly do you live? I'm origionally from Scotland and have been to Denmark many times. Live in Louisiana now.

go to the left column on this site under market place click on parts. they probably have what you want. If you don't see it send them an email. I presume you do not start your Fergie with the transmission shifter as that is how they were manufactured. If you go on the Ferguson forum and type in something like starter or transmission shifter starter you should get a good response about how to go about getting the shifter back to doing the starting. I remember I was reading many posts on this subject.

I bought an old Harry Ferguson and have it running. It appears that there has been some sort of switch operated by an extension from the gearbox situated in front of the steering box.Can
I get a new switch or at least a replacement of some kind from anywhere that you know of. I recently got a scare when my old 8N started in gear. I have got a switch for that one!

Don't blame the tractor. They also rear over backwards but its always the Human element putting it in the position.Like towing with the 3pt linkage.I removed my starter from the gear lever because other drivers tend to select it as a gear, mauling the ringgear.
