yesterday my brother and I tried to go start up our project TO-20. We had the tractor running on wednesay night with no issues. The 6volt battery was dead, so we jumped it using a 12volt jump box directly to the starter (bypassed the battery using the starter post) The starter barely turned over at all. Thinking that we may have burned it out we swapped the drive on the old starter to a brand new 12volt starter off our TO-30 that needed a drive. put that starter together (swapped the drive and had to reset the brushes which was annoying) and nothing. We fiddled around with it and found that the rear most plate (where the brushes mount) was causing the shaft to bind up?? Both the front and rear thrust washers were on the shaft, but when we just barely cinched down the two small screws holding the back plate on the shaft would bind up?? I dont understand what we are doing wrong at all, I thought the drive swap would have been simple but now we have two bad starters!!! Any idea on why this is happening?? Thanks

Did you try spinning the starter on the ground "out" of the tractor? -if fine, then something is binding.
Was is super cold outside? Try starter while holding clutch DOWN--on a cold engine...then let up VERY slow as other gears are turning in cold thick oil.
Is she still a 6 volt system? Make sure when you jump off of a 12v. battery that you have the ground as POSITIVE and starter post as NEGATIVE.

I think there is a miscommunication here haha.. I used the old drive, which was working just fine, and placed it onto the brand new starter. The new starter had new everything, just no drive. when I did this it bound up even though there was all matching parts. Nonetheless, we brought the starter to the rebuilders yesterday, and it was done today, and it works like a charm!! thanks for the help though.

Are you sure the shafts are the same length??. the 12v is longer because it is binding.
Just a thought.

I put the old drive into the new starter using all other new parts and still had the problem. The entire starter was new I used it maybe 3 times and the gear stripped from the part that drives the gear (cheap looking part) everything else was perfect condition and before I took the new one apart it spun very fast!!

The starter drive is what came apart on mine also - it must be the weak link mechanically. In my case it wedged into the nose piece and cracked it also. I have learned that the drive must absorb the impact when the gear spins out and the clutch (or a spring on some models) may be too stiff or binding causing the gear to engage the ring gear on the flywheel too sharply. After a few bangs the gear starts cracking and then falls apart. So the answer is to have the drive spin out without whanging the ring gear or the end of travel. I would not be surprised if the old drive had an existing crack and the new strong motor just snapped it off.

Are both starter bodies the same length? When mine went bad I found that it had had some parts swapped and in fact almost nothing that was classic TO30.
