Well I finally got time to install the new timing chain, also installed a new front crankshaft seal in the front cover while it was off. Started the tractor and she runs really smooth, didn't run her for too long as I have no coolant in due to deciding to replace the bearings in the water pump before reinstalling the radiator etc.

I located new water pump bearings but they are a little bit thinner than the origionals so I'm going to make a new spacer between the bearings 0.148" longer. The old bearings were very rough due to rust.

Also noted that as this is the first time I could actually get and RPM out of the engine, much to my delight the lift arms raised while it was running.

I know most of you think the best oil for the transmission in straight 90w mineral oil, I was leaning toward running 50w engine oil as the temps around here can get down to -40 degrees C. Any thoughts? Bad idea?

Thanks.

I changed my tranny oil to 20W50 last year also, mainly for the cold weather function. It has been working good for me. Unfortunately, I have not had sufficient snow yet this Winter to be worthwhile using my TO to plow the drive.... very disappointing!

I put 20w50 multigrade in my TE 20 and it works great.

50 weight engine oil will be thicker than 90 weight Gear Lube (GL).. It is not the thick stuff you are thinking of... There is lots of info on this site about suitable substitutes.. the prevailing info is to use a multigrade engine oil such as 10W30, 10W40, 15W40, 20W50 for cold climates... My choice would be the 15W40 commercial (read "diesel") oils as they have more wear preventive additives that the others, but then the GL-1 90 Weight basically had no additives.. so any are better than none... Incidently, the viscosity of GL-1 90 weight Gear Lube is very close to a straight 40 engine weight oil.

The reason GL-1 is specified is because it doesn't have additives. This goes back to Fordsons that used bronze worm gears. Even after the Ford/Ferguson they continued the practice since the hydraulic system still had some brass or bronze in it. I will leave it to you to research the effects of additives on non-ferrous wearing parts.
