Howdy Everyone. Its been quite some time since I have posted a message. My old fergy has been working quite well I must say, but recently when I go to start her she needs to be jump started. I took the battery out the other day and put it on my charger overnight. Thought that might help gettin her going. WRONG!!!!! !!! My question is this? If the battery was on the tail end of its life and it still took a boost to get her going would this make a difference when she was running? She starts right up when you put the cables on her and runs great. When I go to turn her off, and try to start her up there is nothing in the battery what so ever. Another question if I may. If the battery was almost dead, would this prevent it from charging while the tractor was running? The amp meter I put in a few years ago shows "0" charging when she is running. If these questions sound lame then I do apoligize, But It can be frustrating when all a guy wants to do is plow snow. Thanks as always----- ----Barry

If you jump start a bad battery, the charging system will run the engine ignition. If you shut the engine down, you"ll have to re-jump it to start it becaue the battery won"t take a charge during the running period. The starter takes a bunch of amps (maybe 40-60 amps?)to start the engine but the ignition system only takes about 4 amps to run.
Bottom line: unless you like to continue jump starting your machine, get a new battery!

Barry, a battery with a dead cell will not charge even if your charging system is good. Sometimes the charging system at the battery will show the battery has enough volts (6.25 volts on 6 volt system when not running or 7 volts when running) and the battery will still not be good due to one cell being dead. Your local auto parts store may have a machine to put a load on the battery and thus test it for this situation, and if so that's where you should start your troubleshooting. I'm assuming you put your volt meter on the battery at rest and with the tractor running?? right? If so, you should have gotten around 6.25 volts at rest and 7 volts running. Tell us more and we can go further.
