Steering Shaft Bearings. in reply to randy hood, 03-01-2008 18:29:32
Randy. You have two identical bearings, top and bottom of the steering shaft.

The top bearing does not get lubricant and usually fails first, the bottom bearing is not exposed to water to the same extent and gets some lubrication from the steering box.

I think that Timken number may be correct. It is a three piece bearing (part numbered "6" in the diagram above), cup, cone and cage. Buy a new bearing, pack and give it a good coating of grease, install and adjust the top lock nut for load.

I think that will fix your problem.

If you can verify the Timken (or other brand) part number, post here as there have been a number of queries on the forum for details on that bearing which I don't think is available from Ferguson or MF dealers.

Randy. Your problem has nothing to do with the steering box. Bruce is on the money - the steering shaft top bearing has passed it's use by date. You'll probably need to change the top bearing and re-adjust the lock nut.

The bearings are a little difficult to source. From memory they are not available from traditional Ferguson or MF suppliers; you'll need to take the old bearing to a good bearing supplier.

bob the bearing, and the cup like piece ,that fits in ,side the bearing looks really wore. there looks like there is another bearing below the top bearing. is this right?. with the top bearing out the steering shaft, it pulls in and out of the column. the piece that fits inside the bearing says TIMKEN 4cb made in usa. should this originally fit snug inside the bearing... thanks randy from TX.

Sector screws will not stop vertical travel. You need to inspect the bearings. Especially the top one that rarely gerts grease. Chances are it wore out and neeeds replacement. Afdter you replace it, you will notice the top of the column has a adjustment nut, lock tab with bendable tangs and a jam nut. Adjust it toi minimize vertical travel and bend one tang down to hold nut. Install jam nut, tighten and bend another tang up to secure jam nut.

would imagine the bushes are allowing the wormshaft to move up the steering column.
