i removed the side cover and can see oil moving around the pump . so i think i may have a stuck relief valve. i dont have a book on the tractor can you get it out by removing the shifter plate? i also found grit on top of the pump after running my hand in the oil. i think a good cleaning will probly do the trick. what do you think? i live in south alabama, so frezing is not a problem. thanks for all the help.

You could have a stuck relief valve. You can get it out by removing the side plate, and it is somewhat easier if you have it drained of oil. Also helpful sometimes to reach wrench in thru drain hole to the valve (again with oil drained of course). A stubby wrench helps. The new relief valve is about $25, looks kinda like a spark plug. When refilling the reservoir, allow plenty of time for the fluid to settle throughout. Book says it holds six gallons, but if you don"t get it all out it may not hold that much. Let is sit overnight before putting in more than five. Use GL-1 available at NAPA and Tractor Supply (read label carefully).

There's a lot of discussion about this in the archives. If I remember right, Jeff(OH) had some great tips on the subject. One was using a hand sprayer filled with kerosene or diesel and sprayed in the trans throught the side plates. (I bought 5 gallons and when I got done I used it to start my wood stove.) It will do wonders. I did mine that way and you can't imagine what came out of there. Scary! lol Some suggest driving a short distance with that in it but I wouldn't recommend it. You don't want those metal particles and dirt going through your bearings.
Oh, and that said about the third plug is good advice. I never found mine till I was all done. I jacked the back of the tractor up and let it run out the forward one instead. I thought it was strange there wasn't one back there. Just didn't look in the right place. It was hidden pretty good.

Allen when you drain oil there are 3 drain plugs you must take out to get all the oil out. 2 are easy to find the third is under the rear end. There are 4 bolts in a square pattern where you could hook a draw bar. In the middle of those four bolts is the third drain plug. let drain over night if possible and really get all the other crap out of there. wiping out with rags is very helpful. Make sure it is clean, clean, before adding new oil or you could be wasting all that time and money. Good luck

Just in case your new to TO's, the 3 point hitch only works when the PTO is in gear, foot off the clutch and PTO turning.
Definitely change your tranny oil. Get your TO warmed-up to above freezing just to make sure any possible water is not frozen and will come out.
When you change the oil, pull the side plate on the tranny where the oil dipstick is, and look in there to make sure you get all the sludge, etc. out of there. Refill the oil, use GL-1 mineral oil, if you live up in the great white North, you can use 20W50 commercial grade diesel engine oil. You need right at about 5 GL oil.
Then run your PTO & check your PTO operation. If it still don't work right, check back here.
