Alternator Question

I changed the hydraulic/transmission
fluid today and when I drained the old--some really gunky stuff came out. Everything worked fine. I appreciate all you guys help. My next question. My TO30 had been converted to 12 volt before I got it. I noticed something strange today. There is only 1 wire going to the alternator. It is red and I assume it is coming from the battery. There is a terminal at the bottom of the alternator, but nothing is on it. Shouldn't there be? Sometimes it is hard to start and every now and then it will just stop running. I wait a few minutes and then it starts up and runs for a while longer. By the way, my little Fergy is just a jewel. I boxbladed all my roads today and it did just great except for the stopping every now and then. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Marlowe, the gauge does work, but it sure doesn't put out much. Yes, I did drain from all 3 drain plugs. Thanks for your help.
