I have a 1950 to20 and re-wired everything. Now when i touch the battery cable i get a dead short.

I have the field to field, arm to arm to regulator and gen. The on the regulator the bat term goes to solenoid connector. This is running neg. ground system.

Anyone know whats wrong?

The guys have covered most things already, but the tractor will run better if it is wired POSITIVE to ground as it was originally, just make sure that the HT coil has power to the correct terminal as well. If the ground lead is still attached to the Dash Panel, make a new long heavy one and move it to one of the bolts close to the starter as the Dash will be at least partly insulated with rust now.Quite a number of users now have told us the tractor does run better when it is wired Positive to ground, if you have an alternator fitted then DO NOT try to change the ground.Regarding the short, have you disconnected the starter and tried it again and have you got the low tension wiring on the correct terminal of the starter switch. If you need the original wiring diagram, I have it and I can send it to you, just email me..John

You have the wrong regulator, then.

It is 12 volt neg. ground with a 12 volt generator. Also that is what i meant its to the switch instead of solinoid.

The generator has 2 posts F and A, the 12 volt regulator has 3 terminals F. A and BATT.

I wired the:
F-F

A-A

then wired the BATT terminal from regulator to the + side of the amp guage.

Then the - side of the amp guage goes through the switch which in turn goes to the connecting block to the starter.

The shop manual wiring diagram says that the the generator connection on the VR connects to the Generator armature. The load connection on the VR goes to the key switch. The field connection on the VR goes to the field connection on the Generator and the Battery connection on the VR goes on to the battery side of the start switch.

To polarize your generator, briefly connect (just a touch) a jumper wire between the armature terminal of the generator and the positive terminal of your 12v negatively grounded battery.

You can find the wiring diagrams at the FENA web site www.fergusonenthusiasts.com.

Hope this helps.

The OEM electrical system does not have a solenoid. It uses a mechanical switch, actuated by the transmision lever. Do you have a non-standard electrical system?

Are you converting to 12V or is still 6V.
If you are still 6V it is a positive ground and the negative goes to the starter switch.
Post that info and that will help diagnos the problem. good luck. JJ
