When my 1951 TO30 is timed right, it does not start very easy. But when I advance the timing a little bit, it starts easier but seems to run a little rougher. Is it a timing problem or maybe a fuel problem? thanks,

"Is it possible that the centrifugal advance weights withing the distributer are stuck in the "advanced" position?"

From your description, I'd start right there!

The timing was set originally to the specs you mentioned. I have put in new points, condensor, plug wires and plugs - but am also thinking a new coil is in order. I rebuilt the carburator and distributor with a new bushing, but it may need some lubrication. Thanks for the things to look for.

Is it possible that the centrifugal advance weights withing the distributer are stuck in the "advanced" position?
Sometimes with weak springs, a tap or two on the side of the dist. will make them return.
I take all my dist.apart and oil and blow out with compressed air, then re-oil the area around the advance weights.

What timing are you setting? It should be 6 o BTDC @400 rpm. The tune up instructions in the Tune-Up Guide to the left says it is TDC but the shop manual says 6 o BTDC.
If you are setting it at 6 o BTDC and it is hard to start, I"d suspect the ignition system may be the problem. Check to make sure that you have a FAT, BLUISH-WHITE SPARK. If you don"t know how to do this get back to the forum. If you have the requisite FAT, BLUISH-WHITE SPARK, roughness(misfire) could be caused by improperly gapped plugs, fouled plugs, the wrong plugs (I, and several others on this forum, would recommed Autolite 3116 plugs in your TO-30), worn distributor bushing/shaft, sticking advance mechanism, bad spark plug wires, bad distributor cap, improper carb adjustment, etc.

If you don"t have a FAT, BLUISH-WHITE SPARK, then you need to find out why. It"s usually corroded or burned points, improperly set points bad condensor, bad coil or improperly connected coil, faulty key switch, damamged primary wiring, dirty and/or corroded connections, etc.

Hope this helps you.
