General questions TO30

Has this ever happened to you before? I was showing off my TO30 to a neighbor and it started right up and ran fine. He liked it, we talked, I shut it off. He left and when I tried to start it again, I got the old starter sound (whirring, but not making contact), the hard start sound, and even clicking when I turned the key. I'm thinking starter, coil, or voltage regulator, or maybe all three. It has been converted to 12 volt. Do I need to get a special coil, or voltage regulator? Can I just have the starter rebuilt? I appreciate any help.

Thanks, Michael Williams

Next time it happens, roll the engine over a little and see if it will catch. I am thinking a broken tooth/teeth on the flywheel starter gear. Confirm by pulling starter and visually inspecting teeth.

Could be as simple as a battery connection. Check all your cables. I assume the battery is good? Doesn't sound like coil or voltage regulator to me based on what you describe, unless I'm misunderstanding the "sounds". If it's starter, any reputable starter/generator shop can rebuild is pretty reasonable and much cheaper than replacing it.

Recently had elec probs w/my 30. Turned out the post on the starter had protruded into the insides, causing it to behave sporadically. Right now the starter is being rebuilt. Cost is over $100. They are also going to convert it to 12 volt because the rest of my system is 12 volt. (hopefully less wear on flywheel). I'd chase down the problem with a voltmeter.
