I've got a question regarding the brakes and or brake shaft on my TO-30. I've noticed that when I stomp on the brakes pretty hard the shaft on the drum end of the right side kind of wobbles or flops around a bit. Is there supposed to be a bushing of some sort out there? I have an I&T shop service manual but it doesnt specify anything like a bushing on that end of the shaft. The tractor stops ok but it does make a clunking sound on that side. Any help would be great,John.

I looked at my TO20 brakes long and hard not long ago. I am pretty sure it floats. You noticed the oblong hole and I'll bet the brake shaft was not worn where it would contact the oblong hole which to me means it should float. Check the parts book at a Massey dealer, that should tell you.

I'd take both brake drums off, and compare the two. I agree the shaft shouldn't shake/wobble any. Inspect the shaft where it passes through the backing plate. You may find that as you suspect, a bushing is worn out. Ferguson brakes are quite similar to auto brakes except they are cam operated instead of hyd;thus no wheel cylinders. With the drums off, inspect the axle seal for leakage, and if found, tighten the nuts on the back side of the backing plate that holds it on;do not over tighten as this will cause the axle ends to rub inside the diff. and cause bigger problems. All this is covered in the owners manual available at a MF dealer. Good luck, Ray,IN

Thanks for the reply Ray. I've had the tires off several times already including when I replaced the brake shoes but I couldnt see any remains of a bushing. The hole through the backing plate is somewhat oblong but I'm not sure if this is due to wear or design ( it looks suspiciously uniform on both sides ). Regarding axel seals, right side seal is leaking a bit is this serious? No drips, but moisture is evident from inside axel.

The leaking oil will only get on the brake shoes, you know the results, minor unless it affects stopping. The brake shaft hole should be round and sliding fit. You can make a bushing to fit the hole after it's reamed round again, if you choose a reamer to match a off-the-shelf bushing. Thats what I'd do anyway.
