12 volt chargeing system question

I have a TO20 that I bought about a year ago and latly have been having trouble with the battery not charging so I checked it like I use to check some of the old cars I pulled the pos terminal off of the battery and it died so I figured the altanator was bad bought a new one still does the same any Ideas??? all help is appriciated. Robert

is it a delco alt? if so it has to be selfexciting napa has the part to put in the alt. so it's a one wire altanator

If you pulled the cable off a generator it would still run with a good generator. The generator provides it's own referance voltage signal.
If you pulled the cable off an alternator, the referance voltage signal is lost and the alternator goes into full field mode. This means it puts out maximum voltage around 27 volts is what I have seen and the amperage climbs on up to around 200 plus amps. Figure your electical system is as strong as the weakest link, what did you fry? The alternator? Coil? Now you need a volt meter and start probing. You might want to start by charging the battery...
