Alan, check out Article Archives/Troubleshooting -- Gasoline Engine on this site for a useful checklist of stuff to check.
Two points out of my experience w/ my 1949 TE-20:
1) the fuel line tends to clog with rust flakes out of the tank. The cure is TE20-CPR: detach the fuel line from the carb and blow through it till you hear bubbles in the tank. I wound up installing an inline fuel filter(NAPA)
2) the distributor shaft rotates COUNTERCLOCKWISE, as indicated by the arrow stamped on the end of the shaft. I spent a l-o-n-g afternoon finishing up a tuneup when I swapped plug wires 2 and 3 on the distributor. Firing order is 1+3+4+2, and my arrangement matched clockwise rotation, so #2 and #3 weren't firing. Good luck, and be sure to post what the problem was. Tex

6 volt and Diesel do not mix! Did you put Diesel in your gas tank?
