The hydraulic lift on my TO30 lifts plenty of weight but it's jerky in the process. Goes down nice and smooth, but going up... the whole tractor shakes. Any hints as to the cause before I tear into this thing? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the responses. It's jerky all the time, cold or warm weather. I just hope it's stickiness or gaskets like you say and not something broken. I can't remember if it had this problem when I first got the tractor or not, but there was water in the tranny that I didn't think to check for. The first winter I know I forced the pump into making an oil slushy. Hope that was not the cause of my problems. Well, at least I know where to start looking. Thanks again !!!

Those old scotch yoke pumps do tend to knock alot. if it goes away when warm.. I'll bet it is nothing but cold oil. if it doesn't.. might want to drop the pump and check the valves or the pistons.. all it takes is for one to be bad and then it will knock bad.

I have a 1951 TO 30 and had the jerking when lifting. Jerking is an indication that at least one of the 4 valves in the pump is not working correctly. That can be caused by, as Jerry said by the fluid, a leaking gasket, or by a sticking
valve. Mine was a sticking valve, I removed the pump from the tractor and then disassembled the side chambers and polished the springs, shafts, and valves. Installed new gaskets and that fixed my problem. Removing the pump should never be the first thing you do it should always be the last. Visual inspection with the side covers off and the tractor running will tell you a lot.

Mine does the same thing only in cold weather at start up. Once the oil warms up, it"s OK. I believe it"s from the 90W GL-1 oil. The manual says to use 80W in temps below 50F or something to that extent.
