Guys, I'm going to check out a TO-30 soon and I know nothing about TO-30s. There's a mystery lever on the transmission left side up by the clutch pedal; don't have a pic but my recollection is it looks like the pic I found last night of the lever of a Sherman combination (up/down) transmission -- could it be anything else?? Owner doesn't know; he didn't know he had a PTO. Any cautions about how to engage/disengage this (I'm assuming dead stop, neutral, clutch in)? If it is one, is it geared low enough to allow use of a tiller? Thanks!

If your gonna do tiller work, I'd look for a 35.
I have a 30 with a sherman and, as the fella said, you can slow the tractor down, but so does the p.t.o. making the tiller speed worthless.
If you happed to have Howard tiller, some models allows you to physically rearrange gearing to speed up tine speed.
Or, they made a "Howard" or "English" rearend that mounted at the dip stick location which changed the axle speed WITHOUT slowing pto. speed. These are pretty rare, and prone to breaking.
Again, I us my TO35 and LOW/1st gear is fine for tilling...also, with a 2 stage clutch, you can start and stop much more accurate when tilling.

Ahhh yes, I think I got my jaw in gear without my brain being hooked up. I shoulda remembered that. When I got my Ferguson sickle mower last year, I hooked it up temporarily to my to-20 to see how it sounded, and even at low rpms, lordy did it spin and rattle. I only ran it for a few seconds and then I remembered the overdrive. After I put it in direct drive it sounded really good!! Irv*

Reid, keep in mind that sherman aux. tranny speeds-up or slows-down the PTO RPMs just the same as it affects the tractor ground speed.

If the lever is a rod with a knob on top with 3 positions; straight through, neutral, and high, its a step up only. If it has a flat curved lever that can be pulled in and out, it most likely a Sherman with HI-LO. Do a google search for Sherman transmissions and there's a good article by Smith complete with pictures on Shermans. If it is a HI_LO,I think it should it be good for a tiller.
If you do get it, welcome to the Fergy world. A great tractor. Irv*
