Guys, I"m confused. I"m getting ready to do a 12 v conversion on my TO-30. I"ve gathered all the brackets and parts, I"ve read everything on the site and the web I can find about doing the conversion, but one thing confuses me. Something that is not specifically addressed is the issue of a charging warning light. My TO-30 doesn"t have one, it has an ammeter. The TO-20"s I"ve read about seem to have the light and no ammeter. On my 30, won"t the gauge perform the same function? Do I need to add the light for any reason?
Any help would be appreciated!

Your ammeter will work just fine. In fact, I wouldn't be without one. You will need to reverse the ammeter leads because you will be reversing the battery to a negative ground. Some folks add a light, some a diode as an exciter to kick in the alternator, I just kick the throttle up a little and watch the needle flick up on my ammeter. Once it starts to charge, it takes care of itself. Just follow the FENA diagram and don't forget to switch your battery over.

The wiring diagram for the TO30 with alternator is available from the FENA website.

An ignition/charging warning light is possible. I'm no arcs and sparks guru but I'm guessing an ignition light may work if wired between the output of the alternator and non earth side of the ignition switch?
Someone here will certainly know.

That is one of the differences of the 20 & 30. They changed from warning light to ammeter when the 30 came out. You will have no need for a warning light. Richard
