Nagging Doubt: Radius Rods

The radius rods at the transmission end sit in a spherical socket; half the spherical socket is in the foot peg on the outside, and a half spherical casting on the inside. It is all clamped together with three studs in the transmission casing.

I have a nagging thought that a spacer plate should be between the half spherical casting on the inside, and the transmission case. It may even be a shim plate to adjust wheel alignment, although neither of my Service Manuals mention it.

Reason for doubt - my aging mind seems to recall removing the spacer plates two years ago when I rebuilt the old girl, but they are not there now. Can't find them in my shed and they don't show in the Service Manual or Sparex parts book.

It may be all my imagination..... . senile decay!

Could someone please look at their TEA20 (and I assume the TO20 and TO30) and see if there is a thin spacer plate between the inner half spherical casting and the transmission casing.

Thanks!

Bruce.

If you need to count the cost, don't start the project!!!

A vehicle restoration will always cost twice your estimate for half the parts you need!
Been there. Done that!!!

Richard. Thanks for the photo:

third party image

I haven't seen those before but looking at the photo I assume they go between the two halves of the radius rod socket - between the foot peg and the half spherical casting that mounts to the transmission?

I assume they may be used to shim open the socket when the radius rod end ball binds in the sockets?

My radius rod end balls are a neat fit in the sockets.

I'll send you an email with an explanation on posting photos to this (and most other) bulletin board.

It's OK.
Looked at Fergy again, this time on the right side and realised I was thinking of the park brake pawl - which is there where it belongs!!

Obviously shims or plates would serve little purpose and make no difference to wheel alignment.

Richard, send me an email to bfulton@goldenwest.org.au and I will reply with simple instructions on posting photos to this forum.

On its way, these are the shims that go inside the spherical socket these are about 3 sheets of paper thick at the most each. My left side has 4 shims and the right side has 3 shims. I had to reread your post several times before I figured out this was not your question. Yes the brake pawl on the right side and there is another spacer on the left side. But you have it figured out by now. Richard

Yes there were plates between the transmission case and the inner socket half. The right hand side was the pawl for the brake lock, part# 181360m1 and the left hand side was part# 825599m1 and the shims that went between the sockets was part# 825445m1.Pretty much same setup on T0 models just different part numbers.

Spacer shims were fitted selectively to tractors that had Radius rods that were tighter than usual on the ball joints, they don't have to have them, it was just if they were too tight. Most tractors did NOT have them. Incidentally it is now possible in the UK to obtain the Radius rods, or the ball joint on the end as a weld-in item also the complete footrest and the other half of the ball cup to replace any worn parts. It has nothing to do with wheel alignment...John

I just put my '50 TO-20 together with pre-1980 copper pennies to take up the slack.

So Bruce as you used the pennies I presume that makes your tractor worth more? Richard

My wife has already put the gun away and is calling the rubber room people to come get me...
I stopped counting about $5500 and I don't recall if that includes the original purchase price or not...

These ladies do not appreciate these finer points of tractor ownership like us men do, now if it was a new hat or coat or a purse that would be sooo different....John

Bob nothing wrong with your mind. I just went and took a picture of the spacers in my TO 30. I am not computer literate enough to put on the forum. If you open a email box I think I can get them to you. Richard

TO 20 does not have a spacer plate.
I have a piece of plastic oil jug in mine to take up the excess space on the transmission side.

Had mine off a short time ago and put a shim in because it was a little worn. there was nothing there previously. TE-A20.
