I have just purchased another TEA-20. Previous owner said the clutch would stick. I adjusted the pedal and all was fine. I opened the starting switch to veiw the clutch housing interior being worried he may have driven it that way. The inside of the housing was black but it doesn't smell burnt and the clutch appears to be opperating OK. Possibly oil reside. Question,
Should I split the tractor and clean the housing and if so what do I use? Is this normal? I never had this problem most of em are like tanks,
Sorry about the lenght and thanks for your replies.

Try cleaning everything you can reach with brake parts cleaner to remove the grease, dirt and lining dust. Avoid spraying the throwout bearing though. If you then experience the stickiing problem, it could be rust on the flywheel. My TO30 was like that when I bought it, and I eased up to a large tree and slipped the clutch until I began to smell it. This solved the sticking and it hasn't since. That was 12 years ago. Thats my experience.

If it shifts good and works good leave it . it is normal for the clutch housing to be grungy. the disk wears and the dust has no where else to go.
