I need to flush out the gas tank on my 1950 TO20 but I'm not sure how to proceed. I was told to use a box of TSP and leave it in the tank for a couple of days after filling the tank with water. Is there another way to remove the sediment without using TSP.

Alan: Hi. Do you know whether there is rust in your tank? If so, I would put a product called Oxysolv in your tank--Sears lists it in their Automotive catalogue. This product is great and really dissolves rust, leaving a zinc phosphate coating. The TSP is water-based and I'd be afraid of your tank rusting, so I'd only use solvent-based chemicals and possibly try some compressed air to blow out debris. You may need to try an extension mirror or an extension magnet, as I think you found some particles that rattled when you shook the tank. My thoughts for now. Good luck, David, MI

I was just wondering about that. I cleand the Bowl on My TO30 and was wondering how to get the rust out of the tank so It won't happen again. Had a Devil of a time getting her back to the barn! It would only run about 5 min. at a time.
These old girls are sure fun though. I cann't work on my truck.
Thanks,
Jerry

Hi, David.
As I'm typing this, my gas tank is off the tractor and am trying to blow out whatever crustaceans and crud there might be. My own personal rattle is behind the baffle where the sediment bowl is and sounds to be about the size of maybe a walnut. There appears to be an opening at the top of the baffle approximately 1/2" which isn't enough for the object to pass through..... (How in the heck did it get there in the first place?) This is why I originally thought whatever it is belongs there.
Any suggestions? Oh yeah, I took the tank off because rust was clogging the filter and my '30 was cutting out.

Thanks for any and all help.

Chuck

Chuck: Hi. You Californians with your rust problems...(Ha Ha). Can you use a flashlight and a long extension mirror to view the object, or get it to rest on the opening of the sediment bowl threaded area (you removed the bowl and fittings, correct?)? I have not looked at mine too closely, but the baffles in the tank may not be fully welded in place, they may flex at the top, etc. If the object is a walnut (not impossible) I'd consider leaving it in there. I would use the Oxysolv to remove the rust--it realy works great! If I were you, I would like to view the object and at least know what's in there. See if you can fashion a hook with a coathanger wire that will catch the lip of the baffle to see if it will flex. (you can see I am reaching for ideas here, but that is what I would do--try anything that might work without causing damage). Keep us posted, David, MI

Hi Dave;
I tried the flashlight thing to no avail. You're right about my curiosity. I tried jostling the tank to get it over the sediment bowl opening but it must go into the small sump next to it. It's very shy. I'm ready to cut the sucker open, find out what it is and then weld it back shut... but I won't. I like your idea about the coat hanger, tho, and may try that.
Thanx,
Chuck.
