I'm working on rebuilding the Z129 engine in my TO-30. The engine is still in the tractor, but I measured a crankshaft connecting rod journal diameter for bearing replacement size. It measured 1.898" compared to the I&T manual's spec of 1.937". Does this mean it's already .039" undersized or does the I&T manual have an incorrect size? The micrometer was calibrated and measuring correctly. The back of the rod bearing had the following info:

1670 SB FM 53

Any idea if this is a bearing for a stock or reground crank?

Since the crank is still in the engine, I wasn't able to measure the main journals. The back of a main bearing had the following info:

03(0 or 9, couldn't read last digit)
1672 SB FM 24

Any idea if this is a bearing for a stock or reground crank?

If the crank has already been ground .040", can it still be reground again (strength??)? Are bearings available for this size? Has anyone put shim stock (.010", .020") behind an .030" bearing to get the clearances right?

Final questions: The reason for the rebuild is a valve dropped, punched a hole in the head and split a piston in 4 pieces. I got another head and will do a complete valve job with new valves, springs, retainers, etc. I was planning on buying a rebuild kit and replacing all the piston, etc, but since the crank seems (to me) to be so far undersized, I may need a rebuilt crank also. Problem is I need the tractor NOW so I can redress my driveway before it completely washes out into the street. Sorry for the rambling...back to the questions: The top of the pistons (still in the block) have the following info:

7A
22454 H
FRONT --->

Is this a stock bore piston for a Z129 engine? I'm considering temporarily replacing just the one broken piston with a used one and buttoning up the engine with existing bearings. This will give me a chance to get a dozen or so hours into driveway repair. Does anyone have ONE piston in decent shape with the above part numbers they'd be willing to sell me at a reasonable price? I'll probably do a complete rebuild this winter if my finances allow me.

Thanks,

Fran

Do not shim the bearings or caps. Use plastigage to see what your bearing clearance is, if it is in spec, reuse the bottom end. What was your oil pressure? Our Fergie ran for 5 years with 10 psi wide open blowing corn. Rule of thumb is 10 psi for every 1000 rpm of engine speed. If you do have the crank turned, make sure it is not turned through the nitriding to soft steel. Cranks of very high output/large journaled engines are delibrately turned to the smallest diameter to reduce shaft speed, not the case here. Check your connecting rod for straightness.

Not having the manual infront of me, I can't remember the sizes, although I did overhaul mine last year and had the crank turned. Your rod bearing markings show a standard size as there is no 030, etc on it, like the main bearing does. The 03(0 or 9) would be an 0 as they are sized in even .010 increments except for .002 or maybe .005 undersized. The 030 indicates your shaft's mains are .030 under already. They can be turned to as much as .060 and bearings are available. I had mine turned and was told that even when you reach the maximum of .060, the shaft could still be brought back by a process of building up the journal surfaces with a metal- sort of a welding process - and then turned to whatever size you need.
