TO20 Problems

I recently bought a 1950 TO20 that had been completely restored. I have 2 problems:

1. After running for a while, the engine starts to idle high and then low, then high, low... I see the connector from the carb to the governer moving back and forth constantly. Any suggestions?

2. Appears only the left brake is grabbing. The guy I bought it from said he installed new brake shoes and seals. Could this be just an adjustment? if so, how and where do you adjust?

You said it dosn't start messing up untill after it has run awhile. So while it could be, I don't think it has to be the governor. The movement of the governor rod might just be the governor trying to do its job. A bad ignition switch could cause the power to the coil to be intermitent. Also the points might be set to close. And a slow fuel supply might cause the problem. Or the carburator might need adjustment. Really need more info on the problem to help. Did you have the throttle set at low or high RPMS? Were you working the tractor or was it just setting and running?
If it runs ok when you first start it and starts to mess up after it starts warming up I would check electrical first and fuel second.

BILL, the idle problem sounds like it could
be the governor, but i would not know
how to correct this. the brake problem
could be one wheel is too tight. there
is a slot in the backing plate, much like
the cars have, but this one is vertical.
there should be a rubber dust cover also.
remove the cover, and with a screwdriver
back off the adjusting nut clockwise to
release, and counterclockwise to tighten.
the wheel should be off the ground when
this is done in order to feel the "drag"
then the brakes should be checked by driving it forward, and apply the brakes.
this would be a try, and check operation.
until it is ok.

I agree, the governor is out of adjustmment. You can fix it using a owners manual purchased from a MF dealer, the proceedure is detailed with pictures. After adjusting the brake shoes on both sides,the brake rod on each side from the main foot pedal, should be adjusted to apply equal braking for both wheels. I do the adjustments and test the braking in dirt or gravel, that way I can see which side is slow to brake. When both sides are equal you should be able to slide the rear tires simultainously on any surface, mine will.The H.Ferguson tractors have excellent brakes if properly serviced.
