IAM LOOKING TO BUY MY FIRST TRACTOR A FERGUSON TO-30. THIS TRACTOR LOOKS OK AND RUNS GOOD IT COMES WITH A BRUSH HOG A PULL DISK AND A DIRT SCOOP. THE OWNERS ARE ASKING 2,200 FOR ALL IT SOUNDS LIKE A GOOD DEAL. BUT WHAT ARE THE THINGS I SHOULD BE LOOKING FOR TO MAKE SURE THIS IS A GOOD DEAL.

I bought a 1953 TO30 several years ago. It now has a completely rebuilt engine, new fuel tank, new radiator. Some good ole boy farmers like to tack a tractor together with silicone caulk so it'll run fine for an few hours, until the caulk starts to fail.

Make sure the governor works, and look for *anything* odd in the water and oil. Look for leaks, too.

It sounds like a terrific deal, if it's a solid TO30.

In addition to Williams water in oil tip; remove the radiator cap and look for continous bubbles, oil, heavy rust and core damage. Ask to drive/operate, to observe smoke from tailpipe, blue or white is bad, some black is normal. Rear tires/rims are expensive to replace, check for cracks, breaks, fluid leakage(if filled) that ruins rims. If you really want to investigate the engine, run a compression check. That's my two cents worth.

MIKE, make sure there is no water in the oil.
has the engine ever been overhauled?
i have a TO-20,and it has water in the oil,
but it still runs, and it seems to be ok except for this. the price sounds good,
but maybe too good?

MIKE, i made a weight from square tubing.
(large) filled it with concrete,and
welded an end on it with two straps of
steel, and bolted it under the bumper.
yes, mine had a bumper when i bought it.
this helps the problem when you pick up a heavy implement on the 3 point.
