Backing Plate/Brake rod ?

While doing what at first appeared to be a simple brake job on my TO30, I've noticed that the hole in the backing plate that the brake rod goes through looks to be quite worn. Or were they made oversized? There are also shims on both sides underneath the brake rods in these holes. Is this the normal set-up and can I get away with some new shims (if I can find them) or should I have the backing plates welded and re-drilled? Any help appreciated. Anything else I should know about while doing this? Thanks

Tyler

My opinion is the brake rod floats in the backing plate to center the brake shoes in the drum. Look at the brake rod and I don't think you will find any wear on it. I could be wrong.

I think you're right, Durner. There doesn't seem to be any wear on the rod itself. Thanks for your help again.
