I would like to know the float setting for a TO 35 with a Carter UT carburator. This carburator appears to be rare on the 35 as the needle valve and seat have been discontinued from the parts book. According to the serial number 153691 the tractor appears to be a 1955.

Roddy, I have the same carb on my TO 35 s/n 140963, and from what I can find, the carb is off of a MF 35, and I recently had a pinhole develop, I ended up getting a new needle valve and seat too, got it from the M-F Dealer in New Glasgow (Proudfoots I think) it was for a MF 35 with the Carter UT 985(the number is on the engine side of the bowl.) Hi Roddy! I waited a couple of days, and since nobody answered, I'll describe the Texas method:
1. put it back together, and if it runs fine, it must be just right! 2. to be more scientific, put it back together, but leave the air intake tube off the carb. Turn on the gas and wait a minute, then if you see gas running out the carb air intake, the float is obviously not providing enough lift on the valve. If you don;t see gas out the air intake, loosen the float-bowl drain plug and see how much gas runs out. If there is none or only a small quantity which decreases to a steady drip, your conclusion is that the float is up against the valve when the bowl is practically empty. It's a lot handier to go through this drill on the bench than with the carb remounted on the tractor for each new setting.
When I went through this drill with the Marvel-Schebler on my TE-20, flooding after a carb rebuild, I first over-adjusted it and the bowl was dry, then got it right on about the third try. The lesson I learned is that only a very tiny adjustment on the neck of the float will have an exaggerated effect on valve action. Good luck!
