the adjustment on the hydraulic lift spring is frozen up . i put a pipe wrench on it to try to loosen it , but no luck. after i tryed to loosen it , the lift would not work. lift shook a little as it lifted, but it worked before.took lift cover off & side covers & found the control fork had came loose from the control valve.so i spreaded the control fork just enough to get control valve arms in holes on the control fork.put back together & worked.few days later i put my plow on & raised it to paint it.went to let it down & it stayed in up position.i guess the control fork has came off again.my questions are : could the lift spring be out of ajustment, causing control fork to come loose when you lift something? is there any little keepers or locks that i might have overlooked, to keep control fork on control valve? any ideas on how to get lift spring loose to ajust or replace & where i might find one? how much weight should tractor lift? tractor lifts my 1- bottom plow , but will not lift a small v-8 car engine. is that asking for too much? thanks in advance, andy

When you took the lift cover off, did you have any problems with it, mine will not come off, I have undun the control valve, undun all of the bolts, but still couldn't prise it off with a bar.
Help needed as I use this tractor quite often

I took out every single one, even for the piston, I would have just given up, but the piston has fallen down and I can't get it back again, so the cover must come off.
It hasn't ever been serviced, so I would be surprised if the lift cover has ever been removed, I have still tried hitting it and levering it, but no success.
I managed to get the pto housing out at the back, and am replacing it as the inside cover that goes over the ball bearings has broken.

hope you can give me some ideas.

Jack,
How did you make out with the cover? If you e-mail me direct I'll be glad to send you pictures of when I removed te lift cover. I can't imagine what has it on so tight. Maybe it's been off before and some sort of adhesive sealant was used with the gasket. Even if you didn't remove the hydralic fork support bracket the top should come loose. It wont lift out until removed but it should come loose. Please let me know what you find. You will get it off, just keep truck'n,
Joe in NY PS. When it finally does loosen up and is off don't kick it hard you'll hurt your foot!

Jack, Try a putty knife at the seam and tap it in several places. There is a gasket between the top and hydraulic housing but maybe its corroded and the junk needs to be broke free. Sorry I was going to write the other day and worn you not to take out the bolts in the middle, as you now know they support the hyd. piston assembly. Maybe a few squirts of "P" oil also, if you must hammer it use a mallet, wood or rubber hammer don't crack it. One last thought because crazy things are done to these machines over the years. Make sure there is no weld on it. Never know. Take heart they DO come off and usually very easy.
Good luck,
Joe

Strarted tapping the piant off the seam with a screwdriver before I read your comments, I'l try a knife.
I also tapped, hit and wollaped the hyd housing with a wooden mallet, but no luck.

P.S. A bit worried about "They do come off and (USUALLY) very easily."

Andy the early model TE tractors had no bracket to keep the control arms onto the control valve balls. Later model TE tractors had an alloy bracket that ran from one arm to the other and attached with 2 small bolts. You may find a couple of holes in your forks and find that some one has left it off. Then it is simply a matter of find a bracket and dropping it in. This is easy to achieve though the side covers. Else you could have to set to and drill a couple of hole this would be a little more difficult and the top would probably have to come off. The other way is get a bit of fence wire and twitch it up between them. I have discussed this matter with someone else who has a TO tractor and it is all the same as a TE in the back.
P.S. To get the "Nut" for the want of a better word off the end of the main heavy spring can be a real bugger of a job and usually requires a lot of heat and patientence - Good Luck
