Fan Shroud?

Just realized my tractor doesn't have one! An old timer I spoke with said that alot of farmers removed them on the Ford N's because the front axel would damage them if you really got into uneven ground. Ferggies have the same problems? How important is it to have the shroud in place and what should I expect to have to pay for one at a graveyard?

I don't believe I've had any problems with overheating though without a gauge I can't be certain. New radiator, hoses, thermostat, belts and coolant. Why didn't Harry put Temp. gauges on these in the first place? I'd much rather know what temp I'm running than how many amps I have. Penny for your thoughts.

I use my tractor for moving logs around in the mountains and the shroud and fan collide quite often but for short periods of time. I put a temp guage in and have thought about removing the shroud as temps in the Pacific NW are cool, but haven't done it yet. If it works for Fords it may be ok for Fergusons.

Hi Tyler:

The fan shroud is necessary to pull the air through the radiator. Without it the air is pulled around the radiator by the fan. Hope this helps

Most Fergies will run a little hotter without a fan shroud & almost all that I've seen have the shroud intact. I just picked one up in Tyler, TX at Christian's Tractors on Friday. Call them at 1-800-527-2668 & talk to Allen Christian. He might have one left that he'd cut a deal on. They take Visa and ship UPS.

And when you do get one, make SURE you mount it to the radiator with good hardware. The previous owner of my MF 35 let the sheet metal screws back out, followed by the shroud dropping on to the fan, then into the radiator! One fan assy.and one new rad later, all is well (after several hours straightening the shroud)

Thanks everyone. I think I'm going to install a temp. gauge and see how hot I'm runnning before I get too worried about the shroud. I seldom run my tractor when it's real warm outside because I mostly haul wood and plow my driveway with it. Who wants to cut and split wood when it's 80 degrees out! Thanks again guys.
