While waiting for a new (new to me) steering gearbox to be delivered I have been planning a modification to my steering system to allow simple lubrication. Take a look at the photos dated 07AUG01 on the website link below. I think this is going to work very well. Your comments are welcome. As with all grease fittings - "easy does it". A little goes a long way.

Anybody have a suggestion on how to grease the gears?

I was going to use zerk fittings on my gear box but opted to get new seals and am glad I did. I doubted the grease would do the job because it is not retained around the gears and after a short time the grease would be pushed from the mesh between the sectors and pinion. I did put in 90/140w gear oil just because I didn't want to take a chance with the seals and my new paint. You don't have to add as much as recommended either. Keep it below the seals and it lubes great and don't leak.
That is what I did.
Good luck,
Joe

I recall reading a post and replies back 6 months or so about a guy who tried to use chassis grease to lube the steering box. Seems like he reported that the grease had hardened around the gears and none on the teeth. His gearbox was worn out because the grease was'nt where it was needed. The trans/hyd/diff 80W mineral oil has worked well in my TO30 so far, the steering is tight and upon inspection, the gears appear to be in excellent condition. I make the adjustment on the box 1 time a year when I change the oil. I drilled and tapped a 1/4" pipe plug at the bottom of the case below a steering shaft to permit draining. Oh, I could'nt open your pictures, the site said I'm not the owner. What did I do wrong?

It's kind of strange how I access my photo album on Webshots.com. If I use my computer at home it automatically logs me onto webshots as "owner" of the photos and provides the website with my user name and password. But if I use my computer at work I go into webshots as a visitor with no user name or password. These are two completely different web addresses. You guys need the one that is a visitor - I guess.

I'll have to remember this in the future. Try this one...
