A few basic thoughts. Check to see that you have the proper DC voltage on the Coil primary when the key is on. Make sure the firing order is correct and that the plug wires are in the correct sequence Clockwise vs Counterclockwise. Check the cap for cracks and dirt. Check the point gap and ensure that they are opening on the high point of the distributor cam. Take the high voltage lead from the center of the cap and hold it a half inch from a ground point (block) and open and close the points with a stick. A spark should jump each time you OPEN the points. Take out the sparkplug for cylinder #1, put your finger in the hole and have someone crank the engine(remove high voltage lead) and feel for compression, try to determine top dead center, then look a the rotor position to see that it points to the wire to Cylinder #1. This all assumes that compression, all mechanical's are OK and the fuel system is OK.

Good Luck

Sounds like frustration city! Check out the post on the General Forum on 9/8, I think, titled "8N wont start", probably back on page 5 or 6 by now. The replies contain valuable shadetree methods of testing components and wiring in the ignition system. Good luck!
