TO-30 Stalled/won't come out of gear

Hello, list.

I just bought what I believe to be a 1951 TO-30.

Yesterday afternoon I borrowed a bushhog and started working on my field. After a couple passes the tractor stalled in second gear while going slightly uphill. I couldn't shift it out of gear so I could try to restart it. I also couldn't disengage the PTO. Since it was getting late in the day I left it there.

My plan is to first of all disconnect the bushhog. If the tractor won't come out of gear and re-start I can try and jump start it with the truck, but I am not sure that this is such a good idea with it in gear.

I can tow it closer to the shed, but what do I look for when I get it there ?

Any help offered is greatly appreciated. I already learned a lot from this forum and am looking forward to learning more.

Thank you, Ark

Put a pipe wrench or bar on the PTO and wiggle back and forth, at the same time try to shift the PTO to neutral. For me it is always easier to get the PTO to neutral than get the transmission to neutral.

If you keep the clutch pedal down, it shouldn't turn the PTO when trying to start it. Once it's running, you should be able to roll it a few feet and get it out of gear.

He can't roll it because it is gear locked with the transmission drive pto. It will be next to impossible to unhook the pto because of the binding.

Use another tractor and driver to tow it 2-3 feet with the clutch depressed, that will free up the binding. This is the safest.

Thats just another reason to get an overrunning adapting clutch. It will take some of that excess length out ( hopefully) and greatly simplify everything else you do. I just had to grind the little flange off to fit against the facing of the seal without rubbing, no big deal. I mowed my lawn for 5 years without one on a 5' deck and I'm tellin you that you will kick yourself someday if you don't get one. Safety is just one small part of the issue. It takes all that push forward momentum away and lets you drive it like a tractor instead of an airplane. It doesn't mean much until you have to stop real quick some day. The roll pin inside acts as a nice shear pin to help protect the whole thing.

I agree. Occasionally you can rock the tractor by hand while another person attempts to shift into neutral, but rocking it uphill will take considerable strength. Towing it is best.

Oh, I forgot that the starter is engaged by the shift lever. Duh. But couldn't you depress the clutch, and jumper the starter to get the engine going, then use it to things unstuck? I've never had this problem with my TO-30. It might not want to change gears, but a bit of power applied via the clutch fixes that; Can it really get jammed into gear, with PTO also jammed on?

Yup, they will really bind up in gear with no power. Try stalling out a JD14T going up hill with the plunger locked up.

Yes your suggestion of jumpering the starter with the clutch depressed will work. I was reluctant to suggest as an assistant will have to stand in front of the tires and rely on the operator to keep his/her wits about and not run over assistant. Also I have no idea what would be chosen to jumper the 250 or so amps and if the jumper will spray molten metal if it is not firmly applied.

Much much safer to use a second tractor and operator to pull a few feet.

Thank you everybody for your help. Got her going yesterday. Just took a quick nudge with a chain to get the gears to loosen up and she fired right up.

Of course I then proceeded to hit a rock with a bushhog and strip PTO shaft adapter. Separate post on that.
