I worked on my uncle's farm in Wisconsin in the late 50's and early 60's, and I maintain a mild interest in the tractors I dealt with in those days. We had a Ferguson tractor that was relatively new then. It was made way after the Ford/Ferguson split (we had one Ford and one Ford-Ferguson), but before the Massey-Harris merger.

The tractor was larger and more powerful than the old Ford and Ford-Ferguson. It had the normal 3 point hitch, but with bigger components than the smaller Ford and Ford-Ferguson tractors. It had a gray engine and chassis, but the hood sheet metal was a light tan color. I am sure this was original, as my uncle was not the type to modify or decorate his equipment. The brand name was definitely Ferguson, not some hyphenated name.

I suspect this "modern" Ferguson styling went away quickly with the Massey-Harris merger. I have never seen another one or a picture of one.

Does anyone know the history of these models, and how long they were around?

Thanks,
Bill Briggs

Bill, I am in Oregon and have a 1957 TO-35 Gas Deluxe with the Beige/Flint Gray color scheme that you describe. Unfortunately someone attempted to paint it a different shade of gray and red. The old girl is in excellent condition and is kind of looking for a new home..... =) Serial # SGM I72I37

Bill - the tractor you remember was most likely a '56 or '57 Ferguson F-40, although during that same period the TO-35 had the same beige/flint gray color scheme. The F-40 came in four configurations: !) utility, 2) high-arch wide front end, 3) single-wheel tricycle, and 4) dual wheel tricycle. The utility had 28" rear tires while the others had 38" rear wheels.

9,097 F-40s were produced. The F-40 was the same as the Massey Harris 50 but with different sheet metal and colors. They were essentially heavy duty TO-35s, having most of the same mechanical components. The front axle/wheels and the steering components were heavier and different so that they could handle front/middle mounted implements.

In 1958 when the merger between Massey Harris and Harry Ferguson was complete, the F-40 was dropped and the MH 50 became the M-F 50.

Hope this information helps.
