Stripped PTO Shaft Adapter

Hello,

I hit a rock yesterday with a bushhog and at first thought that I stripped my PTO shaft. A closer examination showed that previous owner put an adapter on it. Now part of that adapter is wedged in the yoke of the bushhog, and the rest is still on the PTO shaft stuck towards the tractor end of it where I can't get to it easily.

I tried to cut it with a chisel, but it kept slipping and I didn't want to do further damage. Am I looking at removing the PTO shaft so I can get it in the shop or is there an easier way to get what's left of the adapter off of it ? It's really jammed on there.

Ark

You need to install an Overrunning clutch on the shaft. It is safer and not so hard on your tractor. You can get one that will be 1 1/8 female to 1 3/8 male so you won't need the PTO adaptor.
I you search the archives here and on the 8-N 9-N board you will see why you need one. It will keep the brushhog from pushing the tractor when you push in the clutch. You may have to cut the brushhog shaft about 3 or 4 inches because of the extra length of the overrunning clutch. Here is a link to a place that sells them so you can see what they are.

I got my overrunning adapter from AGRI SUPPLY on line for about $40. Its made who knows where but works and makes mowing much easier. You may have to grind off the small flange that sticks out 1/4" or so hitting the cover. It adapts the 1 1/8 to 1 3/8" and saves on the jury rigging. The only drawback is that you can't put the cover on when you are doing something else so you have to watch out for the spinning shaft.

I bought an over-running coupler before I found out there was an adapter on the shaft, so it was the wrong size. The store didn't have the straight 3/8 to 3/8 that I needed.

Thank you for the link, I'll check it out.

Try a die grinder with a small burr to cut it off by grinding a groove across it. That way you can see when the adaptor stops and the shaft begins; should you get into the shaft it's only minor damage that will not cost you a new one. If you must remove the PTO shaft, buy a new gasket while in town, might save you another trip. It's easy to remove if you remember to drain the oil first(sic). It's better that the adaptor broke than the PTO shaft. I twisted one between the pump and trans. once--what a time I had.

I tried a Dremel tool with a carbide cutting bit. While it was cutting it, it really didn't do me much good. I am supposed to pick up a manual for this tractor today and I think I am looking at taking it out.

You won't have much trouble removing/reinstalling it. I don't move anything while the shaft is out and never had any alignment problems reinstalling the shaft. If the shaft feels like it is binding going in or out, while the oil is drained, loosen the pump/bottom plate bolts enough to allow the pump to shift around. Run the pump a short time(30 sec) after the shaft is installed to allow the pump to center itself then tighten the bolts back. This is covered in the owners manual though.
