The wiring of a 12V. conversion system seems to be a major source of confusion here on our forum. We frequently see posts asking for advice and wiring diagrams. I thought I understood the wiring layout and the concept of the exciter on the alternator. But I may be getting too deep into my re-wiring project for my own good. This morning while I was at my local automotive supply house I ran into an old friend who has always been an auto mechanic and specializes in automotive electronics. Like a dang fool, I asked him what I thought was a simple question about the alternator charging system. He proceeded to tell me that all that is required on my system is that the BATT. terminal on the alternator be wired to the + post on the battery. The two spade terminals on the alternator are only to provide control over the amount of charging that the alternator does. He suggested that I simply jump between the 1 and 2 terminals and I should live happily ever after.

My point of confusion is that I have read many posts here that offer different wiring schemes as well as the different wiring diagrams we can find. I'm sure the different wiring schemes offer either better or worse performance. I'm also sure that you guys know more about what works for us than anyone.

I thought I would toss this out into our barnyard and see what what you roosters think. Your comments would be appreciated.

Here's an article that might help.

Here is how I did my TO 20 while back. I used a combination of other diagrams to come up with this one. I don't know how close a 20 is to a 30 but this worked well for me. Good luck.
