Right now I have the axles and hubs on the workbench. I read in the service manual about drilling the lock collar and splitting it to get to the seal. Is this the only way to do this. Also I only have a lock collar on one of the axles. Should there be one on both or not? Also how hard is it to get new lock collars? Thanks for the help.

Matt

You can drill through the lock collars with a good quality bit with no problem. What I did is drill two holes 180 degrees apart. Then when I split the first one with a chisel the other gave out and the collar came right off. I think the manual says to heat the collar to around 300 degrees before driving it on. I heated mine on the kitchen stove and they drove on just fine with a length of pipe as a slide hammer.

Matt, you should have a collar on each one, thats what holds the axle in! any tractor parts supplier should have the collars, try the advertisers here. You don't have to drill the collar too deep, they are very brittle and once drilled, a chisel blow usually cracks them. When you go to put the new collar on it MUST be just under cherry red! Any cooler and it won't go on all the way, too much hotter and it won't shrink back to a tight fit.My MF dealership mechanic installed mine free of charge(I tipped him $10 after the fact)
