This past weekend I finally had the time to remove the pto shaft so that I could extract sheared off adapter from it. While at it I drained as much of the fluid as would come out of the tranny. The stuff in the pan looked like mud and there was quite a bit of sludge inside. I refilled it with some fresh 90-weight mineral oil and even though I drained about 5 gallons out and put about 5 in the dipstick showed it overfilled. It still showed it overfilled after I drained a little over a gallon off. How much of a problem is having the transmission/pto over-filled ?

Should I worry about the sludge and condition of the oil in it ? The gallon of the fresh oil I drained off still looked like mud after it mixed with what was left of the old stuff in the tractor.

Is there something I can add (I was thinking about a gallon of diesel) to the mix to help dissolve the sludge before I drain it next time ?

Thank you for all the help, Ark.

Did you remove all three drain plugs? Each area retains about a quart of oil/sludge unless the drain plug is removed from each- diff, trans, hyds. If all areas are drained and the settlings are removed the system holds 8 gallons. Do not use only diesel fuel to flush while operating the hyds, not enough lubrication. Add a few quarts of 80W mineral oil to protect the pump. Still flushing with motor off-straight diesel is ok. Those pumps are expensive! Good luck.

I didn't realize there was more than one drain plug. I just pulled one that is roughly below the shifter.

I'll have to do a more complete job next time.

Ark.

In that situation, I have used kerosene as a flush and then put in the gear oil or mineral oil after draining the kero. You apparently have some sludge left, but if the hydraulics work well you may be ok. Reach into the drain as best you can next time and pull the sludge. Overfilling sometimes makes the axle seals more prone to leak, which can ruin your brake shoes, so I would not overfill. You did right to drain to correct level.
