TO20 Engine Trouble

I recently purchased my first TO20. The guy I bought it from claims to have recently re-build the motor. It start up and idles fine. The problem is when cutting in the fields, after about 20 or so minutes of work, the motor starts to struggle to stay at full throttle. The RPM's go down all most to it stalls out, then it kicks right back up to full RPM again, stays there for several seconds and then back down again. This keeps happening for the remainder of my cutting. Even if I push the clutch in and stop, the engine keeps going up and down as long as I keep it on full throttle. Not sure where to start looking, carb, gov.... Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Bill: I agree with Ray, although there is so much that can impact the smooth operation of your TO-20...I would check the fuel situation. Start at the tank and make sure that the tank is not full of rust and sediment and that the fuel filter screen at the tank is clean--this requires removing the fuel shut off and bowl from the tank. There is a hex head carburetor fuel bowl clean out bolt. Remove this and make sure that you don't have a lot of sediment and rust. You might even have a sticking float problem and possibly the carburetor needs to be adjusted. Once you have checked the fuel situation out, check to make sure that the spark side of the equation is fine (plugs, leads, cap, rotor, condenser, coil). While this may seem like a long list, keep it simple and check connections and just go through each area looking for the obvious. Keep us posted and good luck, David,MI.

Boy Dave is my face red! I focused on the "recently rebuilt" statement and completely forgot the obvious. Fuel delivery is the most common problem with old engines as you detailed. Together the folks that post here can solve most any problem with a H. Ferguson tractor. I think my wife is jealous of this site I enjoy it so much.

I suspect(1) the governor linkage needs adjustment or the spring is bad; or(2) the governor itself is binding, dirty or broken. The governor adjustment is guesswork without the instructions, get the owners manual for the detailed instructions. Perform the adjustment first, its the easist and most likely.
