I purchased a new "leveling box shaft and pinion " from the MF dealer in 2000 for $10.05. I couldn't believe the price so asked how come so little $. He said it came from their heritage line . Part # was 4297V. I think mine was 14" long.

Duner: The pinion shaft you purchased was aftermarket, and it is a great deal. The OEM shaft which was still available this summer was either just under or just over $100.00. I have found that the M-F dealers carry many of the aftermarket products because either the OEM parts are NLA or just too expensive. David,MI

I recently went through this (49-TO-20). I had a broken crank handle and a bent pinion shaft. I pulled it apart and replaced the crank handle with one from a Ford (N-series) and I had a shop with a pneumatic press straighten the pinion shaft. Aside from needing some paint, it works like new. When I re-assembled it, I used a small roll pin instead of a rivet (in the handle).

You have a few options: You can buy a new assembly (not OEM--about $100.00) which will not look much like the original. You can purchase an OEM pinion shaft (pricey). You can buy a used assembly (someone had sent me an e-mail about one they had for sale--$100+/-). I know of a Ford one that would work and would be about $45.00--it needs some straightening. You can buy an aftermarket replacement crank handle ($7.00). If you want to give me some more details about the condition of yours and your intent with the tractor (keep it original or functional and don't care about originality), I'd be happy to provide additonal information. Do a search through the archives, as I had a number of posts about this topic. Good luck, David,MI
