My '52 TO30 starts and runs well, but the governor seems to prevent a normal idle speed. The engine seems to run to fast. I can slow it to the carburetor idle speed by pushing the carb linkage, but as soon as I let go of the linkage, the governor kicks the engine speed back up. Loosening the lock screw and changing the linkage adjustment doesn't seem to solve the problem. Is there something not right about the governor or is this normal. Thanks for any help on this.

I attempted to email you the front, table of contents, and back page of the original owners manual reprint I purchased at a MF dealer about 13-14 years ago. My ISP must be having problems because I can't get the 19.9mb file to process. I'll attempt in the morning when the college kids are'nt so active on the net here.

Ray-
You probably need to change the way you send messages in order to send big files. If you go to your email like you were going to read (not send) mail, then click on tools at the top, then accounts, under internet accounts click on mail, then click on the box to the right called properties, and finally the box at the top called advanced. Under sending at the bottom it will allow you to break up large messages messages that you want to send into smaller portions. The person receiving will get it all like normal. I hope all that made sense. I'm not a computer wiz, I learned this after trying to send a bunch of pictures of my tractor at once and couldn't. Of course I'd rather be sitting on it instead of at the keyboard. :)

Thank Ken and Dennis! I'm pretty handy with machines and tools being a tool and die maker, but this machine is so exasperating sometimes I'd like to take a hammer to it.

Know what you mean Ray, ah the good old days when a keyboard was where you hung the keys, a hard drive was running the tractor to the back 40 on frozen ground, and a monitor was someone who watched the halls at school to make sure you and your hall pass made it to the restroom and back.

The solution to my problem was drilling and tapping the bottom end of the governor rod, then adding an adjusting screw. The rod was too short.

Eddie, yesterday I emailed you the governor adjustment proceedure from the owners manual, however it was returned undeliverable. Send me an email so I may have your correct address and I resend. The owners manual is available at MF dealers in reprint and contains all the operator adjustable instructions for that tractor, well worth the price.

Sounds like the adjustment screw on the timing gear cover is in too far. I don't know the right name for the thing, I don't have my manual handy. But there is a screw with a slotted end and a locknut that goes into the timing gear cover from the left side (as seen from driver's position). This is what controls the point at which the governor takes effect. If it is in too far, the engine will idle too fast and run too fast. Could that be it? Good luck!

Look at yor linkage pivot points for sloppiness and check the friction brake (cork washer)and is the friction brake moving around in the hole in the dash. Maybe the clamp that supplies pressue to the friction brake is fouling the battery or battery base. Little things make a big difference in idle speed and the ability to hold a steady enging speed at idle. Good luck.
