Hi Noviceguy! I'm in the middle of restoring a '49 TO-20. You might say, I grew up on a '52 TO-30 back on the farm in the '60s and have been on and off them (literally) for 30 years. The TO is almost identical as the TE. Last week I completed the cleaning the '49 air cleaner. The manual says to service the oil cup daily and more often in severe dust conditions. When there's an accumulation of 1/4 in. of foreign material in the bottom. The pre-cleaning screen should be removed and washed in gasoline whenever servicing the oil cup. I'd use a safer type of cleaner solution. The air cleaner body should be removed once or twice a year and thoroughly flushed with gasoline. Remove any lint or other material that has become lodged there. The '49 that I'm working on, I acquired about 5 years ago and the previous owner hadn't had the air cleaner connected prabably the last 35 years. It was so clogged, I needed to soak it 5 days. With a couple of sessions of blowing it out with a air hose and taping it on a hard surface. It was completely blocked. It works fine now. The manual goes on to say that during cold weather, it is recommended to use 10W oil, with 10% kerosene added, from 0-15 degrees F. 10W oil with 25% kerosene, in temperatures consistently below zero. It says to use the same type of oil or lighter as in the crankcase. Make sure all the hose connections are tight. Good luck! Arch,
