Welcome to the club! You willhave lots of fun with your new friend.
I'm going to guess you are experiencing rust migration from the fuel tank to the carb, first filling the sediment bowl and then jamming the fuel line somewhere. I had this problem when I first got my 1949 TE-20. I suppose in an extreme case, the crud would fill up the carburetor float chamber and not allow the float to move downwards enough to open the inlet valve. You can check if your carb has gas by opening the float chamber drain plug on the bottom of the carb. If only a little dribble comes out, you have found the problem. Normally, a steady flow comes out as long as the petcock at the tank is open. The solution is: 1)clean any nasty crud out of the sediment bowl; 2)take the fuel line loose and blow through it; 3)be sure you get flow out of the carb as described above. Just run it and be sure to keep checking the sediment bowl, your first defense against this rust migration, and you will get most of the rust out of the tank. I also installed an inline filter in the fuel line. it clogged up after about 6 months, and I replaced it. No more problems!
Good luck! And enjoy!
Tex

Hello; Sounds just like the problem I had with my new TO-30!! It would run for a couple of minuits then slow down and stop. After cleaning the glass bowl of rust and having to use a rubber hose to blow air up into the tank to clear the inlet tube from the tank MANY TIMES, I took the gas tank off with 2 gals. of gas in it shook it real good turned it upside down on a 5 gal. bucket an let it drain while I sloshed it back and forth. I could not belive how much junk came out!! So I did it a few more times. Then I unscrewed the Glass Bowl assembly off the tank and put some more gas it sloshed the tank again and let it drain out the hole. If you only drain while the bowl assm. is on the tube that sticks up in the tank won't let you get all the rust out! After doing this I put fresh gas in and have not had the problem since. I also drained the carbuator bowl afterwords till it was clear. I must have got a cup or better of junk out of the tank! Mark

Tex is correct, however don't blow air into the carb inlet you'll ruin that screen. It must be cleaned from the inside of the float bowl with carb cleaner to avoid damaging it.
